Meaning of Mission Statement

Disclosedness of the reasons for which a company established and or exists in a written form is basically known as a Mission Statement

Mission statements define corporate philosophy, identity, character, and image of an organization.

Generally insiders or outsiders inspire with a company's mission statement for what an organization stands for. Perspective businesses communicate with their outsiders by disclosing the purpose and goal of  the statements of mission. Confusions and ambiguity are reduced by the company's outsiders by mentioning the reasons for the existence of the organization in the prospective mission statement.


Following are the Effective Characteristics of Mission Statement

There are several characteristics of effective mission statement are under:

1. Feasibility: 

The Organization's mission, which is mentioned in the mission statement, should be feasible, achievable and realistic which will meet in near future, and maintain the trust of outsiders.

2. Preciseness:

Mission statement should be precise in nature. Generally restrictions occur when a narrow or meaningless statement is made. Although, for a meaningful mission statement there should be preciseness for smooth functioning and achieving the target.

3. Motivating:

This is the most important factor, motivates the employees of the organization. Here, motivating in the sense, to motivate the employees of the organization by the organization's mission statement through which employees can serve their full attention towards achieving the goal. Thus, a mission statement should be motivating for employees of the organization and of society.

4. Clarity:

Clarity in mission statements  can lead to taking initiative. Clear and sound mission statements facilitate directions and a right path to  an organization and reduce ambiguous or any kind of doubt in the mind of employees of the organizations  and of the outsiders as well.

5. Distinctive:

To create distinction in the mind of the public is a very crucial factor because an organization reflects its entire activities, corporate philosophy, identity, character, and image of an organization should be distinct from other organizations. 

For example: Mission of YAMAHA Company should be distinct from HERO HONDA Company. Generally both companies provide their assets to the public but objectives of both companies should be distinct and should also be disclosed in their company's mission statement.

6. This is also the most important point to disclose a company's major strategy and its objective in their mission statement. It is necessary to mention how a company is trying to set up their strategy and what step it  takes to achieve  their objective in an efficient way.
